Why do we have to prompt LA’s elected officials to do their job?

On Tuesday Jan 20th members of Indivisible BR joined America in the 2 o’clock Free America Walkout (covered by WBRZ https://www.wbrz.com/news/indivisible-baton-rouge-participates-in-free-america-walkout/) and used the time to present letters the John Kennedy (US senator) and Julia Letlow (US representative for LA’s fifth district) reminding them they work for “We the People” and have indeed sworn an oath to to the very constitution from which that quote is drawn.

Below is the text of those letters.

Dear [Elected Official],
The truth is that when the democratic process is restricted, preempted and nullified democracy is under
attack. Current actions by the president to circumvent the Constitution and weaken the power of the
legislative branch of government is eroding America’s democratic values and power to safeguard
individual freedoms.
Indivisible Baton Rouge (Indivisible BR) is the local grassroots chapter of the national Indivisible.org
movement. We are democracy in action, with a clear focus on impacting government at local, state, and
national levels.

Today we call upon you to take the following three (3) actions:

1. Remove and convict Donald Trump, JD Vance, and members of the current administration’sCabinet for crimes against America and the American people.

2. Remove the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Immigration and Customs Enforcement(ICE) from America’s cities through the rejection of increased funding, restriction of ICE and Border Patrol authority to conduct dragnet operations, and the removal and conviction of Homeland Security Secretary, Kristi Noem.

3. Stop the illegal use of aggression against other countries through actions including the War Powers Resolution and control of military funding.

Upon being sworn in to office you took an oath to support and defend the Constitution, solidifying your
commitment to America’s founding document, and not to a party or leader. Indivisible Baton Rouge
reminds you of this oath, and now requires you as our elected official to uphold the basic premise of that
document – popular sovereignty (power from the people), limited government, separation of powers,
checks and balances, federalism, and protecting everyone’s individual rights.

Sincerely,

Indivisible Baton Rouge
